Case Study: Trekillick Farm, Cornwall

Trekillick Farm began producing milk with a small herd of 60 dairy cows in 1965. Now run by Colin Dyer, his wife Pauline, and son Mike – the fourth generation of the family – the farm looks after 600 pedigree Jersey cows, and has been supplying Trewithen Dairy since 2010. This breed is renowned for producing the creamiest and tastiest milk in the UK.

The Dyers also farm 700 acres of arable land to grow their own crops used to feed their livestock. There’s always a good amount of high quality grass for cows to eat due to Cornwall’s wet and warm climate. The animals (and people) at Trekillick also benefit from being able to drink natural spring water sourced on the farm. This means that Trekillick can be largely self-sufficient.

Trekillick introduced a sexed and beef breeding strategy on the farm back in November 2018, and haven not looked back since.

“Using SexedULTRA 4M has been a no brainer for us. We are using the same amount of straws as conventional semen and getting twice as many heifers. Our conception rates have been on par with conventional semen and our bull to heifer calf ratio has been fantastic, with only 3% bull calves born on the farm since January” Mike Dyer.
