Ultraplus

The highest conception rates ever seen in the cattle industry

Ultraplus

21 years, 4 new gender-sorted semen technologies, and 1 goal... to bring the most reliable, innovation-driven solutions to farmers!

Cogent has been a pioneer of sexed semen technology since its inception in 2001, and with continuous pursuit of improvement, to date we have achieved a lift in conception rates of 11% with SexedULTRA 4M when compared to the original XY sexed semen.

However, this is all about to change…

Alongside our parent company STgenetics, we are proud to introduce Ultraplus – the next generation of Cogent sexed semen.

Ultraplus is the latest result of our commitment to research and development and delivers a further improvement in conception rates of 3% - making it the highest fertility gender-sorted semen in the world.

CEO of STgenetics, Juan Moreno says: “Ultraplus represents the next tier in our continued commitment to bringing the most reliable technology-driven solutions to the industry.

“It goes further beyond our original semen sorting technology to bring the highest conception rates in the history of this product to help our customers meet the profitability and sustainability goals.”

Three years of development and farm trials are behind the launch of Ultraplus, with over 15,000 inseminations - most of which were carried out on UK farms under UK conditions, meaning you can be confident in the promises we make.

Also available in the new Ultraplus range is our improved gender purity product, Ultraplus High Purity, which offers 96-97% gender accuracy - whether it is female dairy calves or male beef calves you require. This gives you the benefit of Ultraplus’ higher conception rates combined with improved gender accuracy of High Purity.

Cogent - pioneers in technology

Since the advent of Artificial Insemination (AI) in dairy cattle, farmers and breeding companies alike had dreamt of selecting the sex of the calves born. It was after extensive research and development that Cogent became the first breeding company in the world to offer sexed semen commercially and our sexed semen has now been successfully used on farm since 1999.

Although the technology for sorting sperm has not changed, Cogent has improved the product enormously from its original form with the application of various new techniques including world-leading quality controls and a world exclusive freezing technique underpinned years of on farm experience. In October 2017, Cogent announced that ST Genetics have acquired the company in a majority shareholder agreement, meaning Cogent not only have a more global reach but have access to the number one sexed semen product on the market today, Ultraplus. Fitting with Cogent’s strategy of supplying high quality heifer replacements with high value beef calves.

So why is sexed SEMEN more important today?

There are a number of reasons:

  • A growing population, particularly in the developing world coupled with changing dietary habits had resulted in the global demand for milk and other dairy products growing daily. No longer is over supply forcing prices down, the opposite is true with supply not able to keep up with ever increasing demand.
  • Replacement heifer prices are at all time highs across the world, with farms expanding in an attempt to meet the global demand for milk.
  • The demand for beef from the dairy herd is high with buyers seeking top quality crossbred calves rather than Holstein bull calves.
  • Animal health & welfare continues to rise as a priority at consumer, supermarket and government level, making easily calved heifers a priority.

Ultraplus provides a fast and highly effective solution to all of these issues, a management tool for the today's progressive dairy farmer.

With years of experience in sexing semen, Cogent offers the most comprehensive list of bulls available sexed, combined with the most robust and reliable product, tried and tested around the world.

We are using the same amount of straws as conventional semen and getting twice as many heifers. Our conception rates have been on par with conventional semen and our bull to heifer calf ratio has been fantastic, with only 3% bull calves born on the farm since January.
